A New Plan

Management is problem solving every day and I have chosen to see this responsibility as a privilege.

Retirement is not in my plan.  At age 65, I started a whole new career as housing has always been and area of interest.  After communicating on line with with Mary Peterson at The Hamilton in Savage, I came over for a visit to see the property for myself.   I asked Mary to describe in a nutshell, what it was like to manage a big apartment building.  She said, “It’s just like taking care of a very large home.”

Glendale Place was right next door, so I took a tour that same day.  In my mind, I began to picture myself living in that kind of atmosphere…. no more yard work, shared spaces that were taken care of by someone else and turn-key freedom to come and go as I pleased.  Several years later when I learned that Great Lakes Management Company was looking for a new resident manager for Glendale Place, I jumped in as a potential candidate for the job.  The rest is history!

Management is problem solving every day and I have chosen to see this responsibility as a privilege.  Sometimes events fall into the “crisis” category, but more often the problems are the ordinary things that come about as both people and stuff move forward toward deterioration.  Like it or not, the Second Law of Thermodynamics is an ever present reality.

Management is also trying to get in front of those problems with forward thinking and proactive planning.  That is where it gets really interesting and creative.  I am fortunate to have a team of coworkers at every level that are very collaborative and supportive.

Who knew that working would be so interesting as a senior?  I love this challenging job!
