Uninvited Knock

I want everyone to VOTE!

I want everyone to VOTE!

I am all for voting and I make it my personal business to find out about the people who are running for office and the issues that are going to be decided by the voters.  As the resident manager of a large apartment complex, I include voter information regarding registration and our poling location for residents in my newsletter that goes out to the people who live in my community here at Glendale Place.  I want everyone to VOTE!

Dealing with the campaigns however, has turned out to be a huge disappointment.  I have had a very unpleasant experience with a local campaign volunteer whose manner was pushy, demanding and inflexible.

The people who live in our lovely apartment complex have come into this community with an expectation of privacy, and they know that solicitors will not be knocking their doors.  However, come to find out, there is a statute on the books that gives campaign candidates the right to enter buildings like ours to register voters and to campaign.

I offered to arrange for a meeting in our community room and invite residents to attend for a group discussion of the issues.  Additionally, I also gladly allow any local candidate to leave campaign materials at our mail pickup area for our residents.  However, these people…. who will remain unnamed in this article, demanded the “letter of the law”, came into our building and knocked on doors for an entire evening.

All feedback from my residents was negative.  They were not amenable to having their evening interrupted by uninvited visitors.

This is an example of “How NOT to gain friends and influence people”!
